Borgo Alba Chiara: from abandoned unfinished buildings to prestigious residence
A unique and exciting experience: there is no better way to describe what we did at Borgo Alba Chiara in Toscolano Maderno, on the western shore of Lake Garda.
This residence is the result of a painstaking restauration of an ancient medieval building from the 16th century, in which we decided to keep the structural design and the most authentic features unaltered, thereby allowing guests to travel back in time during their stay on Lake Garda.
Since the very first time we saw the building, we were captivated by the beauty and history of this complex of abandoned unfinished buildings that sparks an intense and authentic emotional reaction. After a long period of abandonment, and with only few changes having been carried out over time, we were able to discover numerous structural, decorative and historical elements within the building, all of which have a strong evocative connotation. Overall, we discovered many sacred images of different kinds, as well as many elements relating to religion.
We immediately realized that there was something magical about this village, located at the foot of mount Pizzoccolo, right at the end of the historic centre and just a few steps from free bathing beaches, and we conceived a one-of-a-kind destination.
The emotion arising from the historical features of these places had to be shared by as many as possible. This is where the idea of building “Borgo Alba Chiara”, in Toscolano Maderno, came to life: a tourist accommodation facility triggering the beauty and poetry of this extraordinary place.
A modern project with an enchanted look at the past: this is what we did at Residence Alba Chiara
Not only did we care for the restoration project, but we also modelled a real tourist accommodation facility by paying attention to the management of the business activity itself, with the help of one of our partners operating in the field of tourism.
Before designing the project, we thoroughly analysed the place and tried to discover all forgotten historical elements and define the line of intervention to be carried out on existing structures. Research led to the discovery of many treasures, such as traditional coffered ceilings dating back to the first half of the 16th century, a treasured item that perfectly embodies the history of the building and which was then masterfully restored and recovered.
We paid utmost attention to the conservation of historical elements and their integration with modern ones (to guarantee comfort and efficiency), aiming at creating a unique and comfy atmosphere. Votive niches and other works of art found during our research and construction works were then restored and placed in the apartments, thereby giving life to a refined and fascinating space.
We cared for every little detail of external finishes as well, in order to put in place a lightning system able to enhance the features of the building. The pools were placed on two existing terraces in the surrounding area, we restored the original stone walls, rebuilt the local garden and planted yellow climbing roses.
Each building within the village has kept its identity and peculiar features, with facades enhancing the beauty of local stones, which were refurbished by using traditional restoration techniques.
And inside, authentic and comfortable rooms: the architectural elements typical of the past, such as stone walls, brick vaults, terracotta floors, wooden beams and original coffered ceilings with frescos coexist in harmony with today’s services and comforts.
