How to design a medical center: our project for Mevitha 03
We designed a medical center by transforming an office space:
Here we show you the final result we achieved at the Mevitha 03 Medical Center.
This time, we didn’t deal with energy-efficient houses. Let’s take a trip to Salò, in the province of Brescia, to have a look at the end result of a truly unique project, in which we designed and coordinated the works for a medical center.
Why do we describe this project as unique?
Because we have completely transformed a former office building into a functional and classy space, suitable for hosting an advanced center specialized in Ozone Therapy.
Each element was meticulously taken care of – starting from the reorganization of the existing space and the machinery, to the arrangement of the furniture. And it is precisely this meticulous, personalized approach to design that we want to bring your attention to.
Tailor-made design for medical centers – How to combine functionality and hospitality and avoid copy-cat solutions
This specific project entailed a challenging task for us: to combine and balance the functional needs of health care professionals and patients’ need for comfort and hospitality.
This proved to be even more challenging, considering that we transformed an existing space which was previously used as an office, instead of starting from scratch.
But we made it. When designing with a method like ours, which is based on a detailed analysis of the case to find tailor-made solutions, mistakes are just out of the question.
And we work following a precise method – we avoid “ready-to-use” solutions, where the concept of adaptation is limited to a few superficial touches without considering the peculiarities of the place or the specific needs of a modern medical center.
While a standardized approach may simplify the design process, it only rarely leads to optimal results, both in terms of functionality and aesthetics.
A medical center should not only be a safe and comfortable workplace for health care professionals, but also an environment where patients can feel safe and peaceful. For this reason, the designing phase requires a careful analysis of specific needs: starting from the logistics of indoor spaces, designed to facilitate the flow of patients and staff, to the privacy in consultation rooms, to the ergonomics of the spaces to create a functional and serene environment.
Unlike those who offer off-the-shelf solutions, our approach is radically different:
- We start with an in-depth analysis to understand the dynamics and specific needs of the center;
- we develop tailor-made solutions that meet the most stringent safety and accessibility regulations, enrich the patient experience and facilitate the day-to-day operations of staff.
This not only ensures a state-of-the-art medical environment, but also sets new standards in the design of medical centers.
And this is the result for the Mevitha 03 Medical Center in Salò:
Designing a medical center: “details” that make all the difference
What are the key points in designing a medical center?
We don’t want to bore you with technical details (there would be so many things to mention!), so let’s focus on 4 fundamental aspects:
- Window to floor area ratio: each area must receive an adequate amount of natural light and ventilation. This is crucial not only for the well-being of patients and staff, but also to minimize energy consumption related to artificial lighting and air conditioning (just like we do in our passive house projects – and we at Studio Tecnico Alessi are specialists in energy-efficient comfort).
- Comfort and safety: when designing a building, it is of utmost importance to pay attention to every detail that may affect the safety and comfort of the space. Starting from the choice of materials – such as non-slip floors and integrated safety systems – up to the layout of the room and the creation of wide aisles and cozy waiting areas to relieve stress for patients.
- Systems: particular attention is paid to hydraulic and air-conditioning systems. An efficient system is vital not only to ensure optimal thermal comfort, but also to maintain the standards of a sterile and healthy environment.
- Medical equipment set-up: the spaces of a medical center must be designed by paying the utmost attention to details, in order to make sure that the necessary equipment is easily accessible. And the setting up of connection points for medical equipment and emergency systems must be accurate to the millimeter.
Practically, designing a medical center is like solving a complex puzzle, where each piece must fit perfectly with the others.
Not only does our way of working meet immediate needs, but it also ensures that the facility can evolve in response to future advances in medicine and technology.
